About Us: The Journey of LincolnBasketball
At LincolnBasketball, our story is one of passion, community, and a deep love for the game of basketball. Founded in the summer of 2021, we set out with a simple yet ambitious goal: to reignite the spirit of basketball in Lincolnshire after a prolonged hiatus caused by the global pandemic. Our journey began with a small but dedicated group of enthusiasts who believed in the power of basketball to bring people together, foster personal growth, and build lasting connections.
Building a Community
From the very beginning, our vision extended beyond just organising games. We wanted to create a community where players, coaches, referees, and fans could connect, grow, and thrive. Our Open Scrimmage sessions became a hit, regularly reaching capacity as players from all walks of life came together to compete, improve, and enjoy the sport. These sessions, alongside our weekly fixtures and planned events, have helped foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose among our members.
The Return of Basketball to Lincoln
Our first significant milestone was on 12th July 2021, when we hosted a pre-season game. This pivotal event marked the return of competitive basketball to Lincoln. The enthusiasm was palpable after more than 15 months without any basketball action in the city. We started with six pre-season games that saw a mix of well-established teams and new contenders taking to the court. This initial series was more than just a set of games; it was a statement that basketball was back and was here to stay. The energy and excitement of that pre-season set the tone for what was to come. Teams like South Lincs Dragons and Lincoln Lightning quickly made their mark, finishing the pre-season undefeated and setting the stage for a thrilling regular season. As restrictions eased, more teams and players joined, and our community grew, laying the groundwork for a vibrant and inclusive basketball scene in Lincolnshire.
Recognition and Growth
Our efforts didn't go unnoticed. By the end of our first year, LincolnBasketball had not only reestablished basketball in the region but had also been nominated for Active Lincolnshire’s ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sport & Physical Activity Award. This recognition was a testament to our impact in such a short time, engaging hundreds of people across the county and providing a platform for players of all ages and backgrounds to participate in a sport they love. In 2022, we were honoured to win the award, which recognised our work building a diverse and inclusive basketball community. From organising leagues and tournaments to developing junior coaching programs and supporting mental and physical well-being, we have always aimed to make a positive difference on and off the court.
Looking Ahead: Our Vision for the Future
As we look to the future, our commitment to growing basketball in Lincolnshire remains as strong as ever. In our fourth season for 2024/2025, we plan to expand our league structure, introduce playoffs and new tournaments, and offer more opportunities for players of all skill levels to engage with the sport. We’re also enhancing our coaching programs, providing additional training sessions and workshops to help players improve their skills and reach their full potential. Our work doesn’t stop on the court. We aim to strengthen our ties with local schools and community organisations, encouraging more young people to get involved in basketball. Whether through playing, coaching, or volunteering, there are countless ways for individuals to become a part of LincolnBasketball and contribute to the growth of our community.
