From the tip, we saw both teams struggling to set plays or find any rhythm. ULT held a slim 5-4 lead after the first quarter; we saw a similar performance from Lightning in their last game, and they promised us that they would not make the same mistakes this week, as we saw them adapt quickly. Despite ULT winning the rebound battle, pulling down 25 total boards to Lightning’s 15, they couldn’t turn those second-chance opportunities into points. Their shooting struggles, especially from long range (just 1-9 from beyond the arc), meant that they never found their offensive flow.
ULT managed to stay within striking distance through the first three quarters, entering the final quarter down by only a few points. But an avoidable situation in the fourth quarter saw tempers flare after ULT disagreed with a referee's decision, leading to two of their players being ejected from the game. With ULT reduced in numbers, Lightning saw the opportunity, pulling away and outscoring ULT 20-13 in the final quarter, winning the game 40-30.
Lightning’s L. Carter was the standout of the night, leading all scorers with 26 points, shooting an efficient 69.2% from the field. Carter’s ability to consistently find his shot kept Lightning in the game, while ULT’s top scorers, Brazauska (9 points) and Nerka (8 points), couldn’t match his output. A quiet night for both Player-Coaches; Maratas of ULT (0 points) and Rice of Lightning (1pt).

Next week, we welcome reigning champions Tropics back onto their court for their game against Sleaford Hawks. Newark are matched up against the Bombers for their third straight game.
